How to tell when Laptop Hard Drive Fails

Many laptop users are unaware of the fact that their hard drives can fail. As a way of reminder, I would like to give some signs that your laptop hard drive is failing:

If you are losing your laptop and there is a sudden system shutdown or the laptop keeps rebooting then you could be experiencing laptop hard drive failure. This basically means that there are some system files that have been corrupted. The automatic rebooting is usually caused by a virus. This virus attacks the boot files in the system causing them to form a loop i.e. it causes the files to be run over and over again.

If you also happen to hear click sounds from your laptop then your hard drive could be failing. The sounds are most probably as a result of some of the internal components of the hard drive coming into contact with each other. As the platters revolve, the actuator arm could be touching one of the other components within the hard drive. Another reason could be that the same arm is broken and as the hard drive is running it is touching the platters or other components. This is very risky because if the read/write head touches the platters your data could be lost permanently. Therefore, advisable in such situations to contact a data recovery expert who will diagnose the problem and recover data if any has been lost.

Another way to know if your laptop hard drive is failing is if the laptop freezes and hangs a lot/ frequently. At times when one is using their PC, it comes to a sudden halt. Navigation of the mouse becomes a problem. This means that the system has hung/ frozen. Freezing of the system is an indicator that there are some bad sectors on the hard drive and the system is unable to access information it needs to open the file or to load a particular program. This can be caused by overloading of the system memory, corrupt files or having shared programs with conflicting procedural calls.
