Overheating Hard Disk

As a computer user, you should pay attention to the computer as you use it. Special attention should be paid to the hard drive because this is where most, if not all, your information has been stored. One of the things we may fail to recognize is when the hard drive begins to overheat.

In PC, computers are within the CPU casing and when it overheats, it is difficult to know. It is only noticeable when you touch the casing in the area where the hard drive is located and you find that that area is hot. In most laptops, the hard drive is embedded within it and is usually located below it. This means that if you use your laptop regularly on the desk, it would be hard to know when it is overheating. So it is good if you regularly check on you laptop’s or PC’s hard drive as you continue working with it.

Overheating is mainly caused by lack if proper ventilation on the hard drive. One of the causes could be an ineffective fan i.e. the fan could be spoilt. If the fan is not working, then it means that the hard drive cannot be cooled. Another cause of overheating is working in unfavorable condition. There are certain environments that are not conducive for working with computers. If you work with your laptop or PC in a place where there is no proper ventilation and circulation of air, the hard drive might overheat.

Overheating of the hard drive cause the internal components of the same to expand and this is evident through some click sounds. This is because the heat causes expansion of the components and they then come into contact with each other.

The result of this is hard drive crash. In case you are experiencing hard drive overheating you can contact a data recovery specialist to recover your data early. Trying to recover data when the overheating is happen may cause you to lose data permanently.

  1. My second hard drive started making high-pitched circle saw noises, then the computer couldn't detect it anymore. I rebooted, no improvement. Switched off, turned on the chassis fans, and it's been OK since. Maybe it was overheating and the edge of the plates expanded and touched something. Hard to say.
