Laptops, just like every other machine, need to be maintained regularly. It is possible that sometimes as you use your laptop, it may start overheating. When you touch the hard drive area it is quite hot. Here are some reasons why this might happen:
Hardware problems: One of the things that could be wrong is that the laptop fan is probably not working properly. Both PCs and laptops have fans to cool the computer system, especially the hard drive. If the fan is not working properly or is damaged, the hard drive may over heat. This may cause the internal parts of the hard drive to expand and come into contact with each other. When this happens, as the drive is running, you may hear click sounds coming from it due to the contacts that are being made within it. Therefore, if you laptop hard drive overheats, check on the fan.
Environmental conditions: The environmental conditions also cause overheating of the hard drive. If the laptop is placed in a place with extreme heat conditions, it will eventually affect the hard drive. Heat will cause expansion of the hard drive and may cause the internal components to be in contact with each other. It is, therefore, advised to put your laptop or use it in a well ventilated area where air can come in and cool it in addition to the working of the fan.
This overheating may lead to hard drive crashes because the expansion causes the internal components to touch each other and that way leads to a crash.
