General information RAID Recovery

In full, RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. This is a way of storing the same data in different places on multiple hard disks. It is a form of server where there are multiple hard disk drives for storing data. There are different types of RAID that include RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 to mention just a few. Thus, when performing RAID recovery, it is important the type of RAID being used in your system.

Some of the things that may cause RAID failure or cause data to be lost in a RAID system are accidental reconfiguration, missing partitions, viruses, formatted partitions, multiple drive failure, re-initialization of RAID, hardware problems e.g. incompatibility and damaged striping.

So, your RAID system has failed. What do you do next?

First, turn off the RAID array on the server. This ensures that no more writing of data continues on the disk. This is because if writing continues, data written earlier may be overwritten leading to permanent data loss.
Secondly, note down all the events that led to the crashing of the RAID array. It is important to note the problems and the possible solutions that may have been used to try and solve it. This information will help the data recovery experts
Finally, contact a trusted data recovery specialist.

The RAID Recovery Process: Once at the data recovery company, the RAID is disassembled and the problem is determined. Each hard drive is checked and a proper diagnosis on each is done. In RAID recovery, the problem can either be a logical corruption to array or drives, or it could be a physical damage. If the problem is logical, a raw copy image of RAID is made. This is followed by destriping the array using specific software based on the company. Better results are achieved by repeated destriping. If the problem is physical, each drive is taken to a clean room and fixed accordingly. A copy of the raw image is made and destriping is done on the whole array.
