RAID Recovery Steps

In most cases, for one to find a solution to a particular problem there are some defined steps which one follows, this applies also to any recovery process for it to come out successful one should follow some steps. The recovery engineers are the best to perform any recovery task in that they are well conversant with the necessary steps to be followed.

The first step the experts normally do for any RAID recovery is to check whether all of the drives are functional, this is important in that it will ensure complete data recovery. In this case any drive which is not functional is repaired in clean rooms till all of them function normally and this is when the next step can proceed, that is the second step should start only when all the drives are functioning.

The second step is to perform cloning of every drive this should be done sector by sector. The cloning process is where the recovery technicians get to work around bad sectors, and exercise control over how the drive functions. During the cloning process, the original source drive that the user sends is generally put in a "write protect" mode so that no data can be written to the drive. This guarantees that the original source of data is not altered in any way. After completion of the cloning process, actual recovery process is performed on the cloned copies.

The final step is to perform decrypting on the cloned copies. During this process of decrypting the data scattered over multiple drives of an array are placed onto a single destination drive. In most cases, if the damage is not too severe, a complete rebuild of the directory structure and all associated data can be completed. This along with the original source is then handed over to the user.
