1. Dropping the hard disk. This may cause breakage of the magnetic platters which hold data. Once this happens, as the platters can not be rejoined, data is pronounced unrecoverable. The heads may also suffer from the fall and this could create a very difficult situation as far as data recovery is concerned.
2. Physical failure. The way you switch of your system can also be a key reason why you loose your data. You be correctly switching off power as recommended or directly pulling out the poor cord. Computers heat up from long working hours, instantly cutting power causes immediate termination of process and power flows on the components. These may lead to damaged printed circuit boards on disk drives which may require direct replacement to recover data or may lead to loss of data if the information was not correctly saved before power cut down.
3. Using free software or uncertified software feels good, but all free things have a price to pay. No one will sit down and do all the working while you sit back and relaxed.
The software you install as free will halt at sometime. It may be the expiry date and if registration fails they reverse and instead of been useful software programs they become harmful codes in your system. Logical failure begins there.
Owing to software writing on the wrong part of the disk may cause bad sectors which become unreadable. Data in these sectors may be unrecoverable if the damaged is extensive.
