Most time is when you will hear funny sounds coming from your laptop. These sound come from underneath where the hard disk is situated.
Familiar sounds are clicking, buzzing, or a high and low vibration when the system is loading or starting up.
What may cause these sounds?
The disk is built with a spinning spindle which rotates the magnetic platter where data is read or written. The heads are held in suspension mode by shafts avoiding contact with the platters. Owing from the overheating of the disk due to continuous rotation, the disk may suffer from mechanical problems where the beam on which the motor rotates fails causing contact between the head and the magnetic platters. This is a critical situation as the platters suffer from scratches which cause information loss.
In most cases the scratched areas of the disks are pronounced damaged and data is unrecoverable.
In a case where the disk has suffered from physical failure, power is unevenly distributed throughout the disk. Some components are non functional and the disk will produce sounds in patterns as the head tries reading areas with bad sectors.
Damaged printed circuit board limits output of the disk. Areas which are not powered causes the heads to click as power is supplied but the shafts can not move the heads to read and write data.
Whatever sounds you may happen to hear, it is best to take action before your disk losses data. Countries like India and Africa have many data recovery companies which offer cheap labour. There is no reason as to why your data should go missing.
