Criminal activities: Sometimes, it is difficult to know man’s motive. Why would anyone want to destroy information belonging to a certain company? That’s just evil! After someone has spent years of setting up a business, another person is either jealous or has a grudge with him, decides to destroy his business. This may come in form of theft, hacking into a system and even arson i.e. deliberately starting a fire to cause destruction of data. How, then, would you protect against this? I think providing physical security such as security guards and Closed Circuit TV would work.
Hardware malfunctions and breakdowns: Any machine that is made by human beings is bound to fail. Machines need to be checked and maintained regularly. Hardware malfunctions can come in many different forms depending on the factor leading to its demise e.g. power surges, over use of machines without maintenance etc. Another cause of hardware breakdowns could be mishandling and carelessness. In the case of CDs and DVDs, leaving them lying around will cause them to get scratches thus, data may be lost. They may also be exposed to extreme conditions like heat and will fail to work properly. If a hard drive is being moved from one PC to another, it may accidentally drop and crash and may cause data to be lost. It is important that whenever handling hardware, it is always good to be very careful.
System Breakdown: Operating systems form the basis and the platform for other software to be installed. Operating system breakdown may occur due to virus infections, which will either corrupt or destroy some system files. An operating system may also breakdown if some system files are corrupted, changed or deleted. Changing the platform of any computer system means that other things built on that platform are bound to change also. Thus, if the operating system is reconfigured, corrupted or some files are missing, the data within it will change or will be lost.
Natural Disaster strikes: Natural disasters come in form of floods, earthquakes, tornadoes etc. They usually occur at the least expected times. I don’t know yet of any way that they can be prevented. What can be done is to be prepared for them so that we reduce the chances of destruction of data.
